The name Dearbhail is of Irish and Irish Gaelic origin, meaning “true desire.”

Dearbhail is an entity who rules over and resides in the world of the riverside. She feeds off the souls that become lost, gaining control over their shadow forms, known as the algol.

Initially, she appears as Dervla /Derv-lah/, pretending to be human while working at the riverside archives. She feigns helping Naomi in her search for a way out of the world. However, as the story progresses, Dearbhail stands between Naomi and the portal, refusing to allow any soul to escape.
